Reviewing and Modifying Autoscored Items

This section explains how to review and modify scores and condition codes for responses to ELA full write, ELA brief write, and Math short answer items. Most of these responses have an automated score suggested by the machine-scoring system. Any student response with a machine-generated score has not been read by a human reader. You can adjust any machine-generated score and apply your own score after reading the student response using scoring mode, which you can navigate as described in Navigating Hand Scoring and Using Filters. Note that new responses may not have suggested scores provided.

To review responses:

  1. To review scores for a student’s item response, select the item scoring link in the required student’s row on the Test Scoring page. (A suggested score is represented by a number with an exclamation mark icon beside it Machine Scored icon.) The Item Scoring page appears.

This page contains an Item Score section, a Scoring Notes section, the item itself with the student’s response, and some other controls. In the Item Score section, the scores or condition codes suggested by the machine scoring system appear in the table.

  2. Turn on the Rubric & Resources switch to access the exemplar and training guide documents to score the student’s response. The switch setting persists across login sessions. Additional details about the interim question as well as an abbreviated rubric are also provided in the Rubric & Resources section. Educators should use the exemplar and training guide documents provided here to score student responses. (These are the same documents found in TIDE under General Resources.)

The abbreviated rubric on this tab does not represent all the nuances of scoring interim questions and should not be used by itself to score student responses.

  3. Optional: When the Student Settings switch is turned on, any visual settings the student used during the assessment, such as large font, are shown on the item. Your preference persists across login sessions.

  4. Review the student’s entered response. This may require scrolling down the page to see the entire student response. If you agree with the score or condition code suggested, then no further action is needed and you can leave the suggested score as is.

If you would like to modify the score, apply or modify a condition code, or change a condition code to a score, select the desired score or code from the dropdown list in the Item Score section. Repeat this step for each scoring criterion.

Note: If a full write response is not scorable because it is Off Purpose, assign the condition code of Off Purpose to the Evidence/Elaboration row and the Organization/Purpose row. You should then assign a numeric score of 0, 1, or 2 for the Conventions row. If the response is not scorable for any other condition code, apply the same condition code to all three rows.

Note: For more information on condition codes, refer to the PDF version of this user guide on the WCAP portal (https://wa.portal.cambiumast.com).

  5. Optional: If you wish to provide a scoring or condition code explanation to other users, click Add Note in the Scoring Notes section, then enter your comment. Scoring notes save automatically.

    • You can edit or delete any note you create here by selecting Edit Note button or Delete Note button.

    • All notes will be deleted when scores are submitted and processed.

  6. To continue scoring items, do one of the following:

    • To access another item for the same student, select Previous Item button or Next Item button at the top-left corner.

    • To access the same item for another student, use the dropdown list of student names above the item or select Previous Student button or Next Student button to the right of the dropdown.

    • To select another item manually from the Test Scoring page, use the Test Scoring link at the top-left corner.

    • If you need to change the entered score for an item response, return to that item by selecting its numeric score on the Test Scoring page.

Note that full write items are scored using three dimensions, Conventions, Evidence/Elaboration, and Organization and Purpose, for a total of ten points. For test scoring purposes, Evidence/Elaboration and Organization/Purpose are averaged and added to Conventions to create single six-point score. The maximum six points are shown on the Test Scoring page.

Once you have either entered or reviewed the scores for all the items in a test opportunity, you may submit that opportunity for processing.
