Entering Scores for Unscored Items
In order for a student’s test performance to be recorded, scores or condition codes must be selected for all hand-scorable item responses on the test opportunity.
When you have assessments awaiting item scoring, a Tests To Score notification appears in the banner. Selecting this notification opens scoring mode, in which you can enter scores for unscored items.
You can score unscored test opportunities only for one school at a time. If your account is associated with multiple schools, you can switch between them.
To enter scores for unscored items:
1.In the banner, select Tests To Score.
2.If the Select School page appears, choose a school and select Continue.
3.On the scoring Dashboard, select the name of the test you wish to score.
The Test Scoring page appears, displaying a list of students and items you are authorized to score for the selected test.
Alternatively, enter a student ID in the search field in the top-right corner and select . A list of scorable assessments for that student appears.
4.To enter scores for a student’s response to an item, select the Score link or score number link for the item in that student’s row. The Item View window opens.
5.On the Rubric & Resources tab, review the item’s rubric and available resources, if necessary.
6.On the Item & Score tab, review the student’s entered response and select in the table at the top of the window.
- Select a score from the Points Earned dropdown list.
- To assign a condition code to the response, select it from the Condition Code dropdown list.
Note: For more information on condition codes, refer to
In some cases, the Rubric & Resources tab may refer to related items on the test, and scoring of this item will depend in part on the student’s responses to those items. The related items can be viewed in the Item & Score tab under numbered sub-tabs, which you can find directly below the student setting(s) switch.
8.If the item contains multiple scoring criteria, repeat step 7 for each criterion. When you’re applying condition codes to multiple scoring criteria, note that some related criteria may require that the codes are the same.
9.Select Save.
10.Optional: If you wish to provide an explanation for the given score(s) or condition code(s), select Add Note in the Scoring Note section, then enter your comment and select Save. All notes will be deleted at a later stage, as described in Submitting Scored Test Opportunities for Processing.
11.To continue scoring items, do one of the following:
- To view another item for the same student, use one of the buttons labeled with the previous and next item numbers at the upper corners of the Item View window.
- To view the same item for another student, use the up or down arrows on the right side of the Student field at the top of the Item View window.
- To return to the Test Scoring page and select another item manually, close the Item View window. Select another score link.
12.Repeat steps 5–11 until you have entered scores for all the unscored items for the test.
13.Optional: If you need to change the entered score for an item response, you can select the score link for that item on the Test Scoring page and repeat steps 5–11.
Note that for some items, scores are automatically transformed, with the ultimate point value differing from the point values you entered.
Once you have entered scores for all the unscored items in a test opportunity, you may submit that opportunity for processing.
